Físico alemán. Enseñó en la Universidad de Berlín (1919–43). Fue el primero en usar un
cristal para difractar los rayos X; demostró que son radiaciones electromagnéticas similares a la luz y que la estructura molecular de los cristales es una disposición que se repite en forma regular. En 1914 recibió el Premio Nobel por su trabajo en cristalografía. Fue un decidido defensor de la teoría de la relatividad de
Albert Einstein y estudió la teoría cuántica, el efecto
Compton y la desintegración de los átomos.
